Somewhere right now, a jet is about to reposition to a repair station for work that could have been done on its own ramp. Nobody decided that, exactly. It is the habit: something breaks, the aircraft goes to the shop. But a ferry flight to a repair station is still downtime. It just burns fuel while it happens.
Here is how we think about the send-the-mechanic-or-send-the-jet decision, including the part where the honest answer is the repair station.
What actually drives the decision
Four things, and habit is not one of them: what the work is, who can sign for it, what tooling it needs, and what the downtime clock is doing while you decide. Most squawks have a clear answer once you ask those four questions. The trouble is that many operators never ask. The aircraft goes into the queue because that is where aircraft go.
Work that comes to the aircraft
More than most operators expect: avionics and electrical troubleshooting, hydraulic and pneumatic issues, engine and fuel system troubleshooting, component removal and replacement, calendar and flight-hour inspections, and AD and service bulletin work. Routine items are a single-technician dispatch. Complex, multi-system, or time-sensitive jobs get a two-technician team, and multi-day projects are normal when troubleshooting runs long.

The work that belongs at a repair station
We are a mobile maintenance contractor, not a repair station, and some work genuinely needs a Part 145: heavy structural repair, jobs built around fixed tooling and a hangar, and anything where the required sign-off authority sits with a repair station.
The useful skill is spotting that early. A provider who tells you on the first call that a job is repair-station work just saved you a day of finding out. Ask directly: can you sign for this? The answer should be plain either way.
The downtime math operators skip
The queue is not the only cost of the shop visit. Count the whole trip: the repositioning leg out, the wait for the slot, crew time on both ends, and the second ferry home. Then compare that against a technician driving to the aircraft while it sits where it already is.
For a lot of unscheduled squawks, the mobile option wins on the clock. When it does not, that tells you something too, and the math took ten minutes instead of a week of watching the aircraft sit somewhere else.
A practical default
Start with what the work needs, not where aircraft usually go. If it needs a repair station, go, with a clear scope so the visit is one visit. If it does not, bring the wrench to the airplane and keep the downtime local. The big MROs sell capacity. Mobile maintenance sells proximity.
